History

The history of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio (PGNO) began as the Ohio Council on Problem Gambling (Ohio Council) in 1984 and was one of the first state affiliates to the National Council on Problem Gambling. At this time the understanding of problem gambling as a significant public health concern was still in its infancy and the roots of the Ohio Council as well as the field began when Dr. Robert Custer began treating gambling disorder at the Brecksville Veteran's Administration Hospital located near Cleveland, Ohio.

The Ohio Council underwent a transformation rebranding itself as the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio (PGNO) in 2010. Problem Gambling Network of Ohio expanded its efforts to include prevention education treatment and advocacy.

Recognizing that problem gambling can impact individuals across various demographics and socioeconomic backgrounds PGNO worked to reach communities statewide offering accessible resources and support systems. Through its initiatives, PGNO aims not only to assist those currently impacted by gambling but to prevent problem gambling by promoting low-risk guidelines, sharing warning signs, and engaging the spectrum of the gambling support services system. As the understanding of problem gambling continues to evolve, Problem Gambling Network of Ohio remains committed to its mission.
